How to Fix Stage Manager Not Working in macOS Tahoe 26.2
Is Stage Manager greyed out or failing to organize your windows?
Follow Fix 1: The UI Performance Optimization — full Terminal commands and step-by-step instructions below. Verified on macOS Tahoe 26.2.
Recommended Troubleshooting Tool
Before proceeding with manual fixes, we recommend using CleanMyMac X. Quickly identify high CPU apps and optimize system memory with one click.
The Symptom
Stage Manager is turned on in Control Center, but windows don't move to the side, or the "Recent Apps" strip is missing.
The Fix
- Restart the WindowManager Process
Open Terminal and force-kill the process responsible for UI tiling:
killall WindowManager
- Check Display Resolution Settings
Stage Manager requires a minimum vertical resolution. If you are using "Larger Text" on a small MacBook Air screen, Stage Manager might disable the sidebar. Try switching to "Default" in System Settings > Displays.
- Reset Stage Manager Preferences
Delete the configuration file:
defaults delete com.apple.WindowManager
killall WindowManager
Fix 3: The UI Performance Optimization
When WindowServer is lagging and Stage Manager becomes unresponsive.
If Stage Manager feels "heavy" or slow, it's usually because your Mac's RAM is saturated by background processes, leaving no room for the WindowServer animations.
Recommended Tool: CleanMyMac X
- Free Up RAM: Use the Menu Bar app to instantly flush inactive memory. This gives Stage Manager the breathing room it needs to render smooth transitions.
- Optimization: Identify "Heavy Consumers" that are pinning the CPU and causing the WindowManager to lag.
