The Symptom

The Photos app bounces in the dock but never opens, or it shows an error: "Photos must quit because the photo library has become unavailable."

The Fix

1. The Repair Library Command

Quit Photos. Hold down Command + Option and click the Photos icon to launch it. A dialog will appear asking if you want to Repair Library. Click Repair.

1. Check Permissions on External Drives

If your library is on an external drive, right-click the drive in Finder, select Get Info, and ensure "Ignore ownership on this volume" is checked at the bottom.

1. Delete the Photos Cache

Go to ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.Photos/Data/Library/Caches/ and move the contents to the Trash.
