How to Fix Photos Library Not Opening in macOS Tahoe 26.2

Photos app stuck on "Closing Library" or "Preparing Library"?

TL;DR fix

Follow Fix 1: The Automated Photo Management — full Terminal commands and step-by-step instructions below. Verified on macOS Tahoe 26.2.

Recommended Troubleshooting Tool

Before proceeding with manual fixes, we recommend using CleanMyMac X. Quickly identify high CPU apps and optimize system memory with one click.

The Symptom

The Photos app bounces in the dock but never opens, or it shows an error: "Photos must quit because the photo library has become unavailable."

The Fix

  1. The Repair Library Command

Quit Photos. Hold down Command + Option and click the Photos icon to launch it. A dialog will appear asking if you want to Repair Library. Click Repair.

  1. Check Permissions on External Drives

If your library is on an external drive, right-click the drive in Finder, select Get Info, and ensure "Ignore ownership on this volume" is checked at the bottom.

  1. Delete the Photos Cache

Go to ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.Photos/Data/Library/Caches/ and move the contents to the Trash.

Fix 3: The Automated Photo Management

When your library is too large for the system to index efficiently.

Massive libraries with thousands of duplicates often cause the database to time out during launch.

Recommended Tool: Gemini 2 (by MacPaw)

- Duplicate Finder: Scan your Photos library for exact duplicates and "similar" shots that are bloating the database and causing it to crash.

- Cleanup: By reducing the library size, you allow the native "Repair" tool to work faster and more reliably.
