Fix macOS "Disk Not Ejected Properly"

Getting the annoying "Disk Not Ejected Properly" notification every time your Mac wakes up from sleep?

Recommended Troubleshooting Tool

Before proceeding with manual fixes, we recommend using OnyX. The preferred tool for deep system maintenance and resetting the macOS Bluetooth stack.

The Symptom

Your external SSD or HDD disconnects automatically when the Mac sleeps, potentially risking data corruption.

The Fix

  1. Disable "Put hard disks to sleep"

Go to System Settings > Battery > Options (or "Energy Saver" on desktop Macs).

Toggle "Put hard disks to sleep when possible" to Never.

  1. Reset the USB Power Management

macOS Tahoe's aggressive power saving can cut USB voltage too early. In Terminal:

sudo nvram -d bluetoothInternalControllerInfo

*(This triggers a minor reset of the I/O power state on the next reboot.)*

  1. Check for "Jettison" or Similar Apps

If you use third-party tools to manage mounts, ensure they are updated for Sequoia/Tahoe as the mount handling API has changed.

Pro Tip

Try a different cable. 90% of "random disconnects" are caused by high-resistance USB-C cables that drop the data signal when the Mac enters a low-power state.
