How to Fix AccountSSD Disk Space Bug in macOS Tahoe 26.2
Symptom: You receive a "Disk Almost Full" warning, and system analysis shows "AccountSSD" or "Other Users" taking up 50GB+ of space on macOS Tahoe.
Start with Fix 1: Purge the AccountSSD Logs. If the issue persists after that, try Fix 2: Force a FileVault Status Check. Full Terminal commands and step-by-step instructions are in each section below.
Why this happens
A bug in Tahoe's new account encryption layer causes the accountssd process to generate massive temporary log files in a hidden directory if FileVault is enabled but hasn't finished a full scrub.
Recommended Troubleshooting Tool
Before proceeding with manual fixes, we recommend using CleanMyMac X. Quickly identify high CPU apps and optimize system memory with one click.
Fix 1: Purge the AccountSSD Logs
- Open Terminal.
- Run the following command (requires password):
sudo rm -rf /var/db/accountssd/*.log
- Restart your Mac. You should see the space return immediately.
Fix 2: Force a FileVault Status Check
- In Terminal, run:
fdesetup status
- If it says "Encryption in progress," leave your Mac plugged into power overnight to finish, which will stop the log generation.
