Fix Guide: Mac Mini & Studio HDMI "No Signal" on Wake
Symptom: You wake your Mac Mini or Mac Studio from sleep, but your HDMI-connected monitor stays black or shows "No Signal." You have to unplug and replug the HDMI cable to get a picture.
Why this happens
This is a persistent "handshake" error in macOS power management. When the Mac sleeps, it reduces power to the HDMI port. Upon wake, the timing signal for the HDCP (copy protection) handshake fails to sync with the monitor's clock, resulting in no video output.
Recommended Troubleshooting Tool
Before proceeding with manual fixes, we recommend using CleanMyMac X. Quickly identify high CPU apps and optimize system memory with one click.

Fix 1: The "Resolution Kick" (Free)
Force the GPU to re-calculate the display timing without unplugging cables.
- Blind Keyboard Shortcut
- Press
Command + F1(orCommand + Brightness Down). On many Macs, this toggles "Mirror Displays" on and off, which forces a display re-scan.
- Use a Second Screen
- If you have an iPad, use Sidecar to get a screen, then go to System Settings > Displays and toggle the refresh rate of the main monitor from 60Hz to 59.94Hz and back.
Fix 2: Adjust Sleep Energy Settings (Free)
Prevent the HDMI port from entering a "deep sleep" state.
- Open System Settings
- Go to Displays > Advanced...
- Prevent Sleep
- Enable "Prevent automatic sleeping when the display is off."
- Turn Off DDC/CI
- In your *physical* monitor's built-in menu (using the buttons on the monitor), look for a setting called DDC/CI and turn it OFF. This often interferes with the macOS handshake.
Fix 3: The Professional Hardware Solution
When software fixes can't solve a hardware handshake bug.
If your HDMI port continues to fail, it’s likely a physical limitation of the HDMI 2.0/2.1 spec on your specific monitor.
Recommended Tool: CalDigit TS4 / DisplayPort Adapter
- Why: The most reliable fix for Mac Mini/Studio display issues is to avoid the HDMI port entirely. Use a high-quality USB-C to DisplayPort cable or a Thunderbolt dock.
- Result: DisplayPort uses a different handshake protocol that is much more stable with macOS wake/sleep cycles.

Security Check: CleanMyMac X
Ensure that background "display helper" apps or old drivers aren't causing the conflict.
