The Symptom

The F5/F6 keys (or Control Center slider) show the backlight is "on," but the keys don't light up.

The Fix

  1. Reset the Ambient Light Sensor

Cover the camera/top bezel of your Mac with your hand for 10 seconds. macOS sometimes gets stuck thinking the room is bright.

  1. Toggle the "Low Light" Setting

Go to System Settings > Keyboard and toggle "Adjust keyboard brightness in low light" off and then back on.

  1. Delete the HIDs Preferences

Open Terminal:

sudo rm /Library/Preferences/com.apple.keyboard.plist

Restart your Mac.

Fix 3: The System Health Check

When the power management controller (SMC) is ignoring hardware requests.

If the keyboard light isn't receiving power, it's usually an issue with the system's power management distribution.

Recommended Tool: CleanMyMac X

- Maintenance Module: Run the "Repair Disk Permissions." This ensures the system has the correct permissions to write to the hardware preference files that control the backlight.

- Optimization: Check for background processes that might be "pinning" the system sensors and preventing the light sensor from triggering.
