The Symptom

You can't change the volume, and "Internal Speakers" is missing from System Settings > Sound > Output.

The Fix

  1. Restart the Audio Engine (coreaudiod)

Open Terminal and run:

sudo killall coreaudiod

This forces the audio driver to restart without a full reboot.

  1. Reset the NVRAM (Intel Macs)

Restart and hold Cmd + Option + P + R. This clears the hardware state for audio routing.

  1. Check for "Red Light" in Headphone Jack

(For older Macs) If you see a red light in the jack, the Mac thinks a digital optical cable is plugged in. Gently plug and unplug headphones a few times to reset the physical sensor.

Fix 3: The Automated Audio Repair

When the audio MIDI setup or driver caches are corrupted.

Software conflicts from virtual audio drivers (like Zoom, Teams, or OBS) can often "hijack" the output and leave the internal speakers in a disabled state.

Recommended Tool: CleanMyMac X

- Maintenance Module: Run the "Run Maintenance Scripts" to clear system-level temporary files that coreaudiod uses to store hardware states.

- Uninstaller: Use this to completely remove old audio plugins or virtual soundcards that might be blocking your hardware output.
