Fix Guide: Sequoia System Settings Slow or Laggy
Symptom: Opening System Settings on macOS Sequoia (15.x) takes several seconds, or the interface feels unresponsive when clicking between categories.
Why this happens
The redesigned System Settings app relies heavily on SwiftUI and background asset loading. If the system's UI cache or the "Recently Used" database is bloated, the app can stutter.
Recommended Troubleshooting Tool
Before proceeding with manual fixes, we recommend using CleanMyMac X. Quickly identify high CPU apps and optimize system memory with one click.

Fix 1: Clear the Window Server Cache (Free)
UI lag is often caused by stale graphical caches.
- Open Terminal
- Type:
sudo pkill -9 WindowServer - Warning: This will log you out immediately. Save your work first.
- Log back in
- The UI server will restart fresh.
Fix 2: Reduce Motion and Transparency (Free)
Lower the GPU overhead required to render the settings panes.
- Go to System Settings
- Navigate to Accessibility > Display.
- Enable Reduced Effects
- Toggle Reduce motion and Reduce transparency to ON.
- Check if the lag persists.
Fix 3: Reset the Settings Search Index
When searching in settings causes a freeze.
- Terminal Command
- Run:
rm -rf ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.systempreferences
- Re-open System Settings
- The app will rebuild its cache from scratch.
Recommended Tool: CleanMyMac X
UI lag in System Settings is often caused by a bloated "System Junk" cache. CleanMyMac X can safely clear out these interface caches and redundant language files, making the macOS Sequoia interface feel snappy again.
