Follow Fix 1: The System Optimization Suite — full Terminal commands and step-by-step instructions below. Verified on macOS Tahoe 26.2.
Recommended Troubleshooting Tool
Before proceeding with manual fixes, we recommend using CleanMyMac X. Quickly identify high CPU apps and optimize system memory with one click.
The Symptom
You launch System Settings, but no icons appear, or it hangs on the "Loading" screen indefinitely.
The Fix
- Clear the Preferences Cache
Terminal:
rm -rf ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.systempreferences
- Force Restart the Preferences Daemon
Terminal:
killall -9 com.apple.systempreferences
- Check for Corrupted Plist Files
Go to ~/Library/Preferences/ and move com.apple.systempreferences.plist to the Trash. Restart the app.
Fix 3: The System Optimization Suite
When the system's "Defaults" database is fragmented or containing invalid entries.
Recommended Tool: CleanMyMac X
- Maintenance Module: Run the "Run Maintenance Scripts" task. This rotates system logs and clears out the temporary files that cause preference pane hangs.
- Optimization: Identify and quit "Hung Applications" that might be preventing the system settings from loading.
