The Symptom

Activity Monitor shows com.apple.systempreferences or System Settings consuming excessive CPU, even when the window is closed.

The Fix

  1. Clear the Cache for Settings

Open Terminal and run:

rm -rf ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.systempreferences
  1. Reset the Wallpaper Daemon

In many cases, a stuck wallpaper or screen saver process causes the settings lag.

killall wallpaperd
  1. Log Out and Back Into iCloud

Settings often hangs while trying to sync Apple ID data. Go to System Settings > [Your Name] > Sign Out, restart, and sign back in.

Fix 3: The System Optimization Suite

When deep-seated preference conflicts slow down your entire UI.

If System Settings is lagging, it's often a sign that the local "Defaults" database is fragmented or containing invalid entries from uninstalled apps.

Recommended Tool: CleanMyMac X

- Optimization Module: Identify and quit "Hung Applications" and "Heavy Consumers" that are interfering with the System Settings daemon.

- Maintenance: Run the "Run Maintenance Scripts" task to rotate system logs and clear out the temporary files that cause preference pane hangs.
