Fix Guide: AirPod "Automatic Switching" Failure on Tahoe
Symptom: Your AirPods fail to automatically switch from your iPhone to your Mac when you start playing audio on macOS Tahoe, or the "Connect" popup never appears.
Why this happens
Tahoe 26.x uses a new "Ultra-Low Latency Handoff" protocol. If the Bluetooth metadata on your Mac doesn't match the iCloud device registry exactly, the "Smart Switching" handshake is ignored to prevent unauthorized audio hijacking.

Fix 1: Reset "Ignore This Device"
- On your Mac, go to System Settings > Bluetooth.
- Click the (i) next to your AirPods and select Forget This Device.
- Do the same on your iPhone.
- Put AirPods in their case, hold the back button until it flashes white, and re-pair first with the iPhone, then the Mac.
Fix 2: Toggle "Connect to This Mac"
- While AirPods are connected to your Mac, go to System Settings > Bluetooth.
- Click the (i) next to your AirPods.
- Change "Connect to this Mac" to "When last connected to this Mac" and then back to "Automatically."
Recommended Tool: ToothFairy
If Apple's automatic switching remains unreliable:
- Use ToothFairy to add a dedicated AirPods icon to your menu bar. One click connects them instantly, bypassing the buggy auto-switching logic of macOS Tahoe.
