Fix Guide: macOS Tahoe Update Failure / Boot Loop
Symptom: Your Mac is stuck on the Apple logo, restarting repeatedly, or showing a "critical update required" error after attempting to install macOS Tahoe.
Why this happens
macOS Tahoe introduces deep changes to the system seal (SSV). If the update process is interrupted by a power failure or a network glitch, the system may fail to verify the boot volume, leading to a loop.
Fix 1: The "Safe" Manual Recovery (Free)
First, try to clear the persistent update state without wiping data.
**Enter Recovery Mode**
- **Intel Mac:** Restart and hold `Command (⌘) + R`.
- **Apple Silicon (M1/M2/M3/M4):** Shut down. Press and hold the Power button until "Loading startup options" appears. Select **Options > Continue**.
**Run First Aid**
- Select "Macintosh HD" (or your boot drive) and click **First Aid**.
**Revive via Terminal**
- Go to **Utilities > Terminal**.
- Restart your Mac normally.
Fix 2: Force Complete the Update (Advanced)
If First Aid fails, you may need to force the installer to re-verify the files.
**Disable SIP (Temporary)**
- In Recovery Terminal, type: `csrutil disable`
**Reinstall macOS Tahoe**
- Return to the main Recovery menu.
- Select **Reinstall macOS Tahoe**.
- Follow the prompts (your data will remain intact).
**Re-enable SIP**
- Once the update is finished, return to Recovery Terminal and type: `csrutil enable`.
Fix 3: Professional Data Recovery & Optimization
When manual steps aren't enough or you fear data loss.
If you cannot get the Mac to boot into the desktop, the risk of data loss increases. Before you perform a "Clean Install" (which wipes your drive), we recommend using a professional bootable recovery tool.
Recommended Tool: Stellar Data Recovery for Mac
- **Why:** It allows you to create a "Recovery Drive" on a working Mac, plug it into your broken Mac, and pull your files off before you format the drive.
- **When to use:** Use this if Disk Utility shows your drive as "Unmounted" or "Uninitialized."

Prevention: CleanMyMac X
Once you get back into your Mac, ensure the next update doesn't fail due to low disk space or corrupted system caches.
- **The "Update Readiness" Scan:** CleanMyMac X identifies and removes hidden system junk that often interferes with the macOS "Sealing" process during updates.
