Fix Guide: macOS Tahoe "Relocated Items" Disk Space

Symptom: After updating to macOS Tahoe, you see a "Relocated Items" folder on your desktop, and your "System Data" has spiked by 10-20GB.

Why this happens

When macOS Tahoe upgrades the file system structure, it moves incompatible configuration files and legacy security profiles to /Users/Shared/Relocated Items. While these are just "backups," macOS keeps them indexed, often preventing the system from purging the associated update cache.

Recommended Troubleshooting Tool

Before proceeding with manual fixes, we recommend using CleanMyMac X. Quickly identify high CPU apps and optimize system memory with one click.

Fix 1: Review and Remove

  1. Open the Relocated Items folder on your desktop.
  2. Check the Configuration subfolder. Unless you are using highly specific custom enterprise security certificates, these files are obsolete.
  3. Move the entire "Relocated Items" folder to the Trash and empty it.

Fix 2: Flush the Update Metadata

  1. Open Terminal.
  2. Type sudo rm -rf /Library/Updates/* to clear stale update metadata that Tahoe often leaves behind after a successful migration.
  3. Restart your Mac.

Recommended Tool: CleanMyMac

Stale update files are often hidden in deep system directories.

- Use CleanMyMac's "System Junk" scan to automatically find and safely delete the gigabytes of "Relocated Items" and temporary update fragments that Tahoe leaves behind.
