How to Fix Window Freezing and UI Stutter in macOS Tahoe 26.2
Despite the speed improvements in macOS Tahoe, version 26.2 has introduced a "UI Stutter" bug. Users report that app windows randomly freeze for 2-3 seconds, and even basic functions—like copying text or dragging icons—experience noticeable lag.
Recommended Troubleshooting Tool
Before proceeding with manual fixes, we recommend using CleanMyMac X. Quickly identify high CPU apps and optimize system memory with one click.

Method 1: Restart the WindowServer Process
The WindowServer manages the graphical interface. If it develops a leak or hang, the UI will stutter.
- Open Activity Monitor (Command + Space, type "Activity Monitor").
- Search for WindowServer.
- Select it and click the X button at the top.
- Select Force Quit. (Note: This will log you out and close all apps, so save your work first).
Method 2: Disable Stage Manager Previews
Stage Manager in 26.2 is a frequent source of UI lag due to the way it handles window miniatures.
- Go to System Settings > Desktop & Dock.
- Click Customize under Stage Manager.
- Toggle off "Show Recent Apps".
- Test to see if the UI stutter improves.
Method 3: Reset the Pasteboard (for Text Copy Lag)
If you specifically experience lag when copying text, the pboard daemon may be stuck.
- Open Terminal.
- Run the following command:
killall pboard
Method 4: Reduce Motion and Transparency
If your Mac is struggling with the new transparency effects in Tahoe, reducing the graphical load can stop the stuttering.
- Go to System Settings > Accessibility > Display.
- Toggle ON "Reduce motion" and "Reduce transparency".
