The Symptom
Apps like Zoom, FaceTime, or Slack show "No Camera Connected," or the green light flickers but the screen remains black.
The Fix
- Force Restart the Camera Assistant
Terminal:
sudo killall AppleCameraAssistant
sudo killall VDCAssistant
- Check Screen Time Permissions
Go to System Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy > App Restrictions and ensure "Camera" is allowed.
- Reset the SMC (Intel Macs)
Restart and hold Shift + Control + Option on the left side, then press the Power button. This resets the hardware controller for the camera.
Fix 3: The Professional Hardware Diagnostic
When system frameworks fail to recognize the camera hardware.
Recommended Tool: CleanMyMac X
- Maintenance: Run "Repair Disk Permissions." This often fixes the security flag errors that prevent apps from accessing the camera hardware.
- Optimization: Identify background processes that might be "locking" the camera (like ghost browser tabs or hidden recording apps).
